My Neighbours Kid Wants A Beginners Drum Kit, Help!!!
76
What should little Billy Butcher look for when buying a beginners drum kit?
Ok so Billy my neighbors kid wants a beginners drum kit so that he can drive me round the bend during the weekends by making as much noise possible with two sticks, now I am a good neighbor and Billy is a good boy when he's not throwing eggs at my window so I thought I'd help him out by making sure he made the best starter drum set choice possible. You might want to read this if you have a neighbor just like Billy, I have decided to share my new found knowledge with the world...that's you by the way.
There are many questions that you might have such as what are the best brand names that offer good beginner drum sets? Or should I opt for the cheap non brand names? You may be looking for information about actually comes with a drum kit. Do the sticks come with it? Will I get cymbals included in the price? Will they give Billy a stool?
Well fortunately for you I can demystify some of your questions and maybe even provide a few answers that help you find the right drum kit for your neighbor?
Firstly I would say there is little difference between the non brand names and the brand names kits. Yes the quality is slightly higher and the kits may last a fraction longer with a band name kit but the production and manufacturing techniques now are so good that even the budget kits sound great!
Sorry but I'm going to use bullet points now but read them quickly and you won't fall asleep. Here are a few things that are a must buy when you purchase a beginners drum kit.
Firstly you want to buy a 5 piece full sized drum kit, 5 pieces means the five individual drum shells - Bass drum, snare drum and three tom tom shells. A five piece drum kit doesn't take into account for the cymbals, stands, stool or even the sticks or that double bass drum pedal Billy keeps raving about.
Here is a list of everything you'll need
Drums:
- Bass Drum
- Snare
- Three Tom Toms (Small Tom, Large Tom, Floor Tom)
Hardware and Cymbals
- Hi-Hat cymbal and Hi-Hat stand
- Ride cymbal + cymbal stand
- Crash cymbal + stand
- Drum stool
- Sticks
- Drum Tuning Key (but that usually come with the drum kit)
So now you know what you need what next?
If you are a first time buyer the best choice you can make is to buy a package drum kit. The reason why this is a good option is because buying a package set means you get absolutely everything you need sticks and all. It also means you don't have to worry about remembering everything, it all comes in one package (so to speak) and you'll save money to as the drum shop buys in bulk passing the saving on to you and Billy...well Billy's parents at least.
So what package drum kits are on offer? Below will help to give you a few ideas as to some of the top Five Piece Beginner Drum Kits:

So which one did Billy buy????
Billy ended up paying £259 ($392) from a good drum shop they even offered him free sticks and a stick bag to go with his brand new black CB beginners drum kit. My advice here is shop around and see what deals are on offer, the prices above are general guidelines to the prices you should expect to pay. Shops want you business so will always look to offer the best deal possible.
So what of Billy? How is he doing and was my advice useful? Well as a thank you for my research Billy bought me some high quality ear muffs. So weekends are heaven for me and hell for his parents!!!

Where did you find a Pearl Forum kit for $429? The music store I'm looking at has them for over $900.
